Description:

Superoxide dismutase is an enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and molecular oxygen. It can be found in a number of tissues, including ovaries, kidneys, and the brain. Superoxide dismutase is also a component of the defense system against oxidative stress. This drug has been shown to protect cells from radiation-induced DNA damage and has an inhibitory effect on tumor cell growth in tissue culture. The drug can be used as an adjuvant therapy for patients with renal proximal tubular acidosis (RPT) or chronic renal failure who are at risk for renal toxicity due to conjugates, such as acetylcysteine or penicillamine. The mechanism by which it works is not well understood, but it may be due to its ability to inhibit the organic anion transporters that transport conjugates into the cell.
