Selenocysteine (SeCys) is the 21st amino acid with a typical selenium chemistry. It is found in most proteins of animal, plant and microbial origin. Selenocysteine is incorporated into proteins by cells as an essential amino acid, which has been shown to have antioxidant properties. It is also used as a cofactor for some enzymes. Selenocysteine has been reported to act as an electron donor to the enzyme glutathione reductase, which regenerates reduced glutathione from oxidized glutathione. Selenocysteine may be used in place of selenite in the treatment of cancer because it may not be toxic at high concentrations and can inhibit proliferation of various tumor cell lines.
