Sodium aluminate is a compound that consists of sodium ions, aluminum ions, and hydroxyl groups. It is used as a catalyst in the manufacture of polyethylene terephthalate. Sodium aluminate has been found to have a basic structure with an aluminum ion in the center surrounded by four oxygen atoms and four sodium ions. The aluminum ion is coordinated with six oxygen atoms and six sodium ions. The hydroxyl group on the surface of the particle gives it water-soluble properties. When activated, it can be used as a catalyst for polymerization reactions. Sodium aluminate is typically produced by thermal activation at approximately 850°C. One method of activation is using a silicon carbide heating element immersed in molten alumina to generate heat internally, which then heats up the entire batch of material to its melting point and above.
