Sodium 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonate is a synthetic surfactant that is used in the manufacture of detergents, soaps and other cleaning agents. It has the chemical formula CHClOSOCHCOONa and is produced by the reaction of hydrochloric acid with sodium dodecyl sulfonic acid. The structure consists of an aliphatic hydrocarbon chain, a hydroxyl group, and a chloride ion. Sodium 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropanesulfonate can be synthesized from fatty acids or malic acid by reacting these compounds with chloropropane in presence of hydroxyl amine. The synthesis proceeds via an elimination reaction to form a fatty acyl chloride which reacts with hydroxyl amine to produce the desired product. This synthetic scheme is shown below:
CHClOSOCHCOONa + C6H12O6 → ClC6H10O
