(+/-)-Salsolinol hydrobromide is a potential biomarker that can be used to detect the presence of monoamine neurotransmitters. It has been shown to react with dopamine and noradrenaline, which are neurotransmitters in the central nervous system. (+/-)-Salsolinol hydrobromide also reacts with serotonin, adrenaline, and histamine. In addition, it reacts with other compounds such as acetone and phenylethylamine. (+/-)-Salsolinol hydrobromide is an intermediate product in the enzymatic reaction that degrades dopamine in rat liver microsomes. PC12 cells have been found to be sensitive to this compound's genotoxic potential. Studies on humans have shown that salsolinol hydrobromide increases ATP levels and causes Parkinsonian effects.
