Sanguinarium chloride is a natural compound that has been shown to be effective as an inhibitor drug against cancer cells. It is a water-soluble, pro-apoptotic protein that induces apoptosis in human breast cancer cells. Sanguinarine binds strongly to the DNA template and inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are responsible for the metabolism of many drugs. Sanguinarine also increases the production of pro-apoptotic proteins in vitro and in vivo. The biological properties of sanguinarine have not been studied extensively outside of its effects on tumorigenesis, but it has been shown to have ecological effects on bacteria and fungi.
