Sulfluramid is an organosulfur compound that inhibits the synthesis of fatty acids and has been shown to have genotoxic effects. Sulfluramid inhibits the activity of enzymes in the proximal tubules, leading to a decrease in weight gain, as well as an increase in dry weight. The elimination rate of sulfluramid is increased by administration with anhydrous sodium. Sulfluramid has shown genotoxic effects on rats and other animals. Sulfluramid's reaction mechanism is currently unknown, but it may be due to its sulfonamide group. Sulphonamides are only poorly absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and are eliminated through excretion by the kidney or bile ducts.
