Sumatriptan succinate is a triptan drug that is used to treat migraines. It has been shown to have high specificity for 5-HT1 receptors and low affinity for 5-HT2A, 5-HT2B, or 5-HT2C receptors. Sumatriptan succinate is rapidly metabolized by monoamine oxidase type A (MAO-A) in the liver to form sumatriptan. The major metabolite of sumatriptan is N-oxide (sumatriptan N-oxide). Sumatriptan N-oxide has been shown to be less potent than sumatriptan at inhibiting the release of inflammatory substances from mast cells in vitro.
