Silicristin is a coumarin derivative that acts as an inhibitor of mitochondrial functions. It inhibits the enzyme activities of acetyl-CoA carboxylase, acetoacetyl-CoA thiolase, and malonyl-CoA decarboxylase. Silicristin has been shown to have hypoglycemic effects in mice and humans by inhibiting the uptake of glucose by tissues such as the liver. This drug also possesses anti-cancer properties, which are due to its ability to inhibit skin cancer cells through inhibition of mitochondrial protein synthesis. Silicristin is also used for the treatment of chronic viral hepatitis and autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
