Scutellarein is an anti-inflammatory natural compound derived from Scutellaria baicalensis. It inhibits the activity of an enzyme called DNA polymerase by binding to it, thereby preventing transcription and replication. Scutellarein has been shown to inhibit the expression of bcl-2 protein in a model system, which may contribute to its effects on bowel disease. Scutellarein also induces apoptosis by inhibiting the activation of pro-apoptotic proteins such as caspases or the release of cytochrome C from mitochondria. This compound also has a matrix effect that can be seen in cancer cells, where it inhibits cell migration and invasion through inhibition of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). Scutellarein is found in various plants, including scutellaria baicalensis and scutellaria lateriflora. The analytical method used for this compound is high performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection (HPLC
