S-tribromobenzene can also be used as a solvent for methanol, but it has been shown to react with palladium metal and form organometallic compounds. The compound's structure changes when hydroxyl groups are removed by debromination or copper oxide reduction. This process may cause viscosity to change because of the strain on the molecule's skeleton.
