The expression plasmid containing the gene for (S)-styrene oxide was introduced into a wild-type strain of Solanum tuberosum, and the dry weight of this plant increased by 8%. (S)-Styrene oxide is an enantiomer of (R)-styrene oxide and has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of v79 cells when added at a concentration of 25 μM.
