Sesamol is an iron-chelating compound that has been shown to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species. It is also a natural compound that can be found in sesame oil and other plant foods. Sesamol has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which are beneficial for cardiovascular health. It has also been shown to inhibit neuronal death by reducing DNA damage and apoptosis pathway activation. Sesamol reacts with phosphate groups in dinucleotide cofactors, inhibiting their biological activities. This reaction occurs in vitro, but not in vivo due to the high reactivity of sesamol with thiol groups present in vivo.
