Scopoline is a coumarin derivative that is used to treat prostate cancer. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of prostate cancer cells in culture. Scopoline inhibits the activity of the enzyme fatty acid synthase, which is responsible for synthesizing fatty acids from acetyl-coenzyme A and malonyl-coenzyme A. This inhibition prevents the formation of prostaglandins, which are involved in inflammation and tumor growth. Scopoline has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) such as MMP-2 and MMP-9.
Scopoline is an analytical reagent that can be used to measure transfer reactions involving hydroxyl groups in organic solvents. It is typically used in analytical chemistry as a matrix effect modifier for ion chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
