- Tenuigenin
Senegenin is a natural component of the root of Panax ginseng, which has been shown to have a variety of biological effects including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It is also an equilibrative nucleoside, which means that it can be phosphorylated by kinases on both sides of the molecule, yielding two products. One product is senegenin, and the other is O-phospho-senegenin. The phosphorylation reaction occurs at the C3 position on the sugar residue. Senegenin binds to Bcl-2 protein in melanoma cells and inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit injury induced neuronal death in rat hippocampal neurons, as well as promote neurite outgrowth in PC12 cells. Senegenin also activates the response element for neural cell differentiation.
