Sodium cyanoborohydride is a reducing agent that binds to the oxygen in aldehydes and ketones to form alcohols. It has been used as a model system for congestive heart failure, and shown to bind to oligosaccharides in the presence of colloidal gold. Sodium cyanoborohydride has been shown to be an effective antimicrobial agent in analytical methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This molecule has also been shown to have receptor activity, which may be due to its ability to induce oxidative injury by binding with hydrogen peroxide. The molecule can also react with acidic solutions or human serum at high concentrations, leading to x-ray diffraction data that can be used for structural analysis.
