It is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to exert its effect by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, including Aerobacter aerogenes. Sodium 2-biphenylate has been used in wastewater treatment as an inhibitor for phosphatase and transferase enzymes. The long-term toxicity of this compound in animals has not been established; however, toxicological studies have shown that it does not cause any significant adverse effects on the liver or kidneys at doses up to 1,000 mg/kg.
