Sodium ethoxide is the sodium salt of ethyl alcohol. It is a weak base with a pKa of 14.8 and can be used as an esterifying agent in organic synthesis. Sodium ethoxide has shown to have anti-inflammatory and antacid properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis. Sodium ethoxide also has been shown to have beneficial effects on bowel disease, congestive heart failure, and inflammatory bowel disease. This drug may act by binding to the hydroxyl group of the polymerase chain reaction solution, thereby preventing DNA polymerization.
