Ser-Ala-OH is a water-soluble chemical with a hydroxyl group. It is the amino acid Serine and L-Alanine, which has a benzyl group at the end of it. The benzyl group is an aromatic ring that contains six carbon atoms, one nitrogen atom, and one hydrogen atom. This chemical has shown to have physiological effects on streptococcus bacteria. It also has been shown to be resistant to penicillin antibiotics. Ser-Ala-OH binds to membrane phospholipids in target cells by an inorganic base that allows for uptake by passive diffusion. Ser-Ala-OH can be used as a target for drugs such as penicillin because it inhibits protein synthesis in these cells and prevents the production of proteins vital for cell division.
