Sodium bismuthate is an inorganic compound that can be used as a reagent for the qualitative analysis of fatty acids. The reaction between sodium bismuthate and potassium dichromate produces a water vapor and an inorganic acid. The reaction solution is then heated to evaporate the water, leaving the remaining product, which consists of a linear calibration curve of absorbance vs. concentration. This method is more sensitive than other methods such as gas chromatography or mass spectrometry because it relies on only one chemical reaction. Sodium bismuthate has been shown to have excellent chemical stability in acidic solutions, making it ideal for use with fatty acids that are susceptible to hydrolysis.
