Sudan II is a diazo dye that can be used as a fluorescence probe for wastewater treatment. It has been shown to be an effective indicator of the presence of surfactant sodium dodecyl in human serum. Sudan II has also been used as a synchronous fluorescence indicator, where it was shown to react with electron-donating solvents such as ethanol and diethylether. This dye has also been used in analytical methods such as titration calorimetry, electrochemical detector, and Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Sudan II can be synthesized by reacting 2-mercaptobenzothiazole with methyl ethyl ketone or co2 flow.
