Streptodornase (SD) is a proteolytic enzyme that cleaves the alpha-1,4 glycosidic bond between two N-acetylglucosamine units in the sequence of a casein. It is used to treat bowel disease and has been shown to be effective in the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae. SD is also used as an analog for human neutrophil elastase, and it has been found to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. This enzyme has also been shown to have diagnostic applications for infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, pneumonitis, and cystic fibrosis. SD can be used as a marker for calcium pantothenate deficiency and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. SD contains a signal peptide that directs it through the endoplasmic reticulum into the Golgi apparatus prior to secretion into the extracellular space.
