- Sanguinarine, nitrate
Sanguinarine is a natural compound that is found in plants such as bloodroot and mandrake. It has been shown to be an inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 enzyme, which plays an important role in drug metabolism. Sanguinarine nitrate is a model system for the study of p450 activity. It inhibits the Drosophila melanogaster cell line by binding to DNA templates and inhibiting water vapor-induced fluorescence. This compound also has pro-apoptotic properties, as shown by its ability to induce apoptosis in human osteosarcoma cells. This compound may also have ecological effects, as it has been shown to increase the mortality rates of various populations of insects and small mammals.
