Serotonin bimaleate is an analogue of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which is used as a medication to treat chronic pain. Serotonin bimaleate interacts with 5-HT2 receptors and enhances the release of dopamine in the brain. This drug also has low potency and acts as a partial agonist at 5-HT1 receptors. It may be used for pain relief, but its efficacy is unclear. Serotonin bimaleate also has a role in the serotonergic system and has been shown to interact with platelets, which are involved in blood clotting. The uptake of serotonin bimaleate by platelets was found to be activated by glutamate or acetylcholine.
