Sarsapogenin is a natural compound that belongs to the group of sesquiterpenes. It has been shown to have cytotoxicity and antimicrobial properties against Candida glabrata. Sarsapogenin also binds to the polymerase chain, inhibits DNA synthesis, and induces apoptosis in human leukemia HL-60 cells. Additionally, it has been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment as an alternative to conventional treatments such as chlorination. Sarsasapogenin can be extracted from the leaves of Quillaja saponaria, a plant native to Chile and Argentina. The extract has been shown to have antitumor activity against human malignant melanoma cells and pluripotent cells (cells capable of differentiating into other types). This extract may also have anti-inflammatory effects due to its ability to inhibit the production of proinflammatory cytokines by toll-like receptors (TLRs).
