Description:Saligenin is a pro-apoptotic protein that belongs to the group of sesquiterpene lactones. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in a model system and in cells grown in vitro. Saligenin induces apoptosis by inhibiting protein synthesis and by inducing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. This protein also has an inhibitory effect on the phosphorylation of Akt, which is involved in the regulation of cell survival, proliferation, and differentiation. Saligenin has been shown to induce apoptosis in human serum erythrocytes when used at sublethal doses. The mechanism of saligenin-mediated apoptosis involves cleavage of caspase 3 by a protease called calpain. Saligenin also binds to human serum albumin (HSA), which may be related to its plasma stability and intracellular localization.
