Description:

Strictosidine is a chemical compound that is an active analogue of the alkaloid protoberberine. It inhibits cytochrome P450 activity and has been shown to have anti-cancer activity. Strictosidine has also been shown to bind to DNA, where it exerts transcriptional regulation by binding to regulatory regions of specific genes. The mechanism of strictosidine's action is not well understood, but it has been suggested that the molecule activates or inhibits transcription through interaction with RNA polymerase or other transcription factors. The basic structure of strictosidine is similar to other steroid alkaloids, which are found in plants and fungi. Structural analysis suggests that this similarity may be due to the incorporation of a 4-hydroxycoumarin moiety into a rigid framework composed of five fused six-membered rings. The enzyme activities associated with strictosidine production in plants and fungi have been studied extensively, but the metabolic disorders associated with these enzymes are not well
