Scandoside methyl ester is a fatty acid that is found in the bark and leaves of the Chinese herb, Fructus Amomi. This compound has been shown to have a variety of biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial activities. Scandoside methyl ester has been shown to inhibit prostate cancer cells and induce apoptosis through activation of caspase-3, which is an enzyme involved in the process of programmed cell death. Scandoside methyl ester also inhibits the proliferation of human colon cancer cells by inhibiting protein synthesis at the ribosome level and by inducing apoptosis. This compound has been shown to inhibit growth of Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. Scandoside methyl ester may be used as an analytical marker for hydrolysis reactions.
