Trans-stilbene oxide is a synthetic non-toxic antitumor agent that is used in the treatment of various cancers. It has been shown to inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the ribosome and blocking the attachment of amino acids to the ribosome. Trans-stilbene oxide also inhibits transcriptional activation by interfering with the enzyme polymerase chain reaction. The chemical stability, high stability towards oxidation, and high level of cytotoxicity have been observed in vitro. This compound has also been shown to induce liver microsomal enzymes such as glucuronide conjugate, which may be responsible for its hepatotoxic effects.
