Sodium periodate is the oxidizing agent in this compound. It is a salt of sodium and periodate, with the chemical formula NaIO4. The periodate ion is an oxidizing agent that can be used to convert organic compounds into their corresponding dioxins or dioxin-like compounds. Sodium periodate has been shown to have a high affinity for Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and a high rate of activation by hydrogen peroxide, which may explain its toxicity. Sodium periodate may be used as an alternative to chlorination for wastewater treatment because it does not produce harmful byproducts such as trihalomethanes and other carcinogens.
Sodium Periodate - 10wt% is a crystalline cellulose that has been treated with hydrogen fluoride and periodic acid to produce the oxidizing agent sodium periodate. This compound can be used in biological studies as a model system for oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen species, such as hydrogen peroxide or singlet
