Description:

Saccharin sodium anhydrous is a white, crystalline solid that is used as a low-calorie sweetener. It has been shown to have constant pressure and physiological effects in animals. Saccharin sodium anhydrous has also been shown to be effective in the treatment of infectious diseases such as diarrhoea and bowel disease. Saccharin sodium anhydrous is available commercially as a mixture of saccharin sodium monohydrate and saccharin sodium dihydrate. The optimum concentration for use in treating infectious diseases is 0.1%.

Saccharin sodium anhydrous can be prepared by reacting chitosan with ammonium hydroxide at high temperature and pressure, followed by hydrolysis of the quaternary ammonium salt under acidic conditions. The resulting product can be purified by recrystallization from water or ethanol, followed by drying under vacuum at room temperature or below.
