It has been shown to inhibit the ATP levels in mitochondria and to reduce the activity of methyl malonic acid, a precursor for cellular energy production. This molecule acts as a competitive inhibitor of methionine synthase, which prevents the formation of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), an essential cofactor for protein synthesis. Tetrahydro-2-furoic acid also inhibits growth factor signaling pathways involved in tumor cell proliferation and angiogenesis.
