Tri-sodium citrate is a model system for the polymerase chain reaction. It is used to study the effect of citrate on polymerase activity in blood samples, and has been shown to inhibit bacterial growth in vitro. Tri-sodium citrate also shows synergistic effects with antibiotics, especially when used in combination with sodium citrate dihydrate. This compound has been studied as a potential therapeutic agent for bowel disease and colon cancer. Tri-sodium citrate binds to DNA and inhibits DNA replication, which causes apoptosis by inhibiting transcription of caspases and other proteins required for cell division.
