2-(4-Tolyl)-benzonitrile is a diazonium salt that is synthesized by the acylation of toluene with sodium nitrite. The vibrational spectrum of this compound has been studied in anhydrous sodium chloride and it shows a phase equilibrium between the solid and liquid phases. Experimental solubility data for 2-(4-tolyl)-benzonitrile was determined at various temperatures and pH values, as well as in biphenyl. The molecular weight of this compound has been found to be 165.5 g/mol, which may explain its solubility in biphenyl.
2-(4-Tolyl)-benzonitrile has been shown to inhibit enzymes such as cytochrome p450, lipoxygenase, cyclooxygenase, and xanthine oxidase. It also inhibits the synthesis of DNA and RNA by inhibiting rna synthesis and protein synthesis.
