It is used as an antimicrobial agent and as an irreversible enzyme inhibitor. 4-Toluenesulfonyl chloride inhibits enzymes in the bowel, which may be due to its ability to form a disulfide bond with cysteine residues. This compound has been shown to have anti-cancer properties in vitro, where it inhibited the growth of carcinoma cells by inhibiting DNA synthesis. 4-Toluenesulfonyl chloride also has inhibitory properties against nitrogen atoms, which are found in the active site of many enzymes.
