Tetrabromo-1,4-benzoquinone is a synthetic reagent that inhibits the activity of dopamine β-hydroxylase, an enzyme involved in the synthesis of norepinephrine. Tetrabromo-1,4-benzoquinone has been shown to inhibit the oxidation of propranolol hydrochloride by hydrochloric acid and its transfer reactions with dopamine. The optimum concentration for this inhibitor is 8 mM. This reaction mechanism is similar to that of catecholamines such as dopamine and norepinephrine. The kinetic data shows that tetrabromo-1,4-benzoquinone has inhibitory properties on the enzyme's activity at concentrations greater than or equal to 2 mM.
