Tetrahydrofurfuryl chloride is an organic compound that is used as a chemical intermediate in the manufacturing of nicotinic acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter. Tetrahydrofurfuryl chloride is also used to synthesize acetylcholine receptor ligands, which are used for research purposes. The reaction of tetrahydrofurfuryl chloride with malonic acid and aqueous sodium hydroxide produces pyridinium chlorides, which are used to produce quaternary ammonium salts. Tetrahydrofurfuryl chloride reacts with ammonia gas at high temperatures to form nitrogen gas and hydrogen chloride gas. Nitrogen gas can be recovered from the hydrogen chloride gas through fractional distillation or by reacting it with water.
