Product Information
Tryptone is a type of tryptophan-rich protein that is used as a nutrient in microbiological culture media. Tryptone is used to maintain the balance of amino acids and vitamins in the medium, and also inhibit the growth of certain bacteria by competing with them for nutrients. Tryptone has been shown to be more effective at inhibiting bacterial growth than tryptophan alone. It has a high resistance to antimicrobial agents, which may be due to its ability to efflux these agents out of the cell. This efflux may be mediated by multidrug efflux pumps, such as P-glycoprotein or MRP1. Tryptone also has an effect on cellular physiology, binding to receptors on the surface of cells and triggering changes in redox potential.
