Thymoquinone is a natural compound that has been shown to inhibit the activity of cyclase, an enzyme that catalyzes the formation of prostaglandins. This inhibition leads to anti-inflammatory effects and may be responsible for its ability to suppress the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Thymoquinone also inhibits neuronal death induced by oxidative injury and apoptosis pathway activation. It has been shown to have a hypoglycemic effect in mice as well as inhibit the activities of glutathione peroxidase and glutathione reductase. Thymoquinone has also been shown to be toxic in animal studies, with toxicity studies showing cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, and hepatotoxicity.
