3-Trifluoromethylbenzyl bromide is a chiral electrophile used in asymmetric synthesis. It can be prepared by the reaction of 3-bromobenzyl alcohol with trifluoromethylmagnesium chloride, followed by hydrolysis of the resulting benzylic alcohols. The compound has been shown to react with amides and diarylmethanes to produce pyrazoles and diarylmethanes, respectively. This reaction was optimized using a variety of techniques, including voltammetry and x-ray crystallographic studies. 3-Trifluoromethylbenzyl bromide has also been shown to be effective in the transfer hydrogenation of ketones to produce alcohols.
