Tremulacin is a trifluoroacetylated glycoside derived from protocatechuic acid. Tremulacin has been shown to have genotoxic effects and interact with fatty acids, in vitro assays, and tannins. Tremulacin has also been shown to be a potent inhibitor of the enzyme hydrolysis of cyclopentyl esters. Tremulacin has demonstrated low light activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the expression of c-myc, an oncogene that regulates cell division. Tremulacin has also been shown to cause liver steatosis in rats, which is likely due to its inhibition of hepatic fatty acid oxidation.
