Alpha-tocotrienol is a member of the vitamin E family and is an important part of the human diet. It has been shown to have a protective effect on mitochondrial membrane potential, which can be measured using a model system. In addition, alpha-tocotrienol has been found to have anti-inflammatory properties in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. This compound also has antioxidant properties and may be effective against neuronal death in the central nervous system. Alpha-tocotrienol also inhibits the LPS-induced inflammatory response in mice by decreasing enzyme activities such as cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase. Alpha-tocotrienol can also prevent tumorigenesis in mice by regulating physiological functions, including energy metabolism and tissue homeostasis.
