Tryptycene is a crystalline molecule that belongs to the group of hydroxyquinones. It has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which may be due to its ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation. Tryptycene also has been shown to have a protective effect on cells by preventing mitochondrial cytochrome release and reducing intracellular Ca2+ overload. Tryptycene is soluble in water and has two crystalline polymorphs, α-tryptycene and β-tryptycene. The α-polymorph is more soluble in water than the β-polymorph, but it is less stable at higher temperatures. The protonated form of tryptycene can act as a hydrogen bond acceptor, which may account for its transport properties.
