Tubeimoside II is a triterpenoid saponin that is extracted from the plant Huperzia serrata. It has been shown to have cytotoxic activity against human cancer cells and can inhibit tumor growth. Tubeimoside II also has anti-inflammatory properties, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the production of prostaglandins. This compound inhibits the proliferation of human erythrocytes and fibroblasts through binding with basic amino acids in their cell membranes. Tubeimoside II has low potency, but demonstrates no allergic reactions or other side effects in humans. The drug is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and exerts an effect on mitochondria, inhibiting cytochrome c oxidase and ATP synthase, leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and cell death.
