2-Thiobenzyl nicotinic acid is a synthetic compound that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It is used in the treatment of tuberculosis. 2-Thiobenzyl nicotinic acid is synthesized from 2-chloronicotinic acid, which is prepared by reacting benzyl chloride and hydrazine. The synthesis process can be divided into two steps: first, the benzyl chloride reacts with hydrazine to form an intermediate, which undergoes an acid-catalyzed hydrolysis to produce 2-chloronicotinic acid; second, the 2-chloronicotinic acid reacts with thiourea to form 2-thiobenzyl nicotinic acid. It has been shown that this compound inhibits fungal and bacterial growth at concentrations of 10 μM or less.
