4',5,7,8-Tetrahydroxyflavanone is a naturally occurring compound found in the Chinese herb Carthamus tinctorius. It is an antidiabetic agent that has been shown to increase insulin secretion in rats and to have anti-inflammatory properties. 4',5,7,8-Tetrahydroxyflavanone also has the potential to be used as a chemopreventative agent against cervical cancer. The compound binds to the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and inhibits EGFR kinase activity in human liver cells. This inhibition leads to decreased levels of fatty acids and cholesterol, which may lead to weight loss. However, due to its low bioavailability, it is not yet known if 4',5,7,8-tetrahydroxyflavanone can be used for the treatment of obesity.
