Description:Tofisopam is a drug that belongs to the class of benzodiazepines. It is used in the treatment of panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. Tofisopam has a half-life of 17 hours and is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes into 2 metabolites: alpha-hydroxytofisopam and beta-hydroxytofisopam. Tofisopam binds to GABA receptors that are found on neurons in the brain, which helps relieve anxiety. Tofisopam also inhibits inhibitory proteins such as N-type calcium channels, which leads to an increase in excitability in brain cells. This drug has been shown to be effective in clinical trials for patients with panic disorder at optimum concentrations ranging from 1–4 mg/day, although it can lead to drug interactions if taken with other medications.
