Description

Thiomersal is a preservative that has been used in vaccines and other pharmaceutical products to prevent microbial contamination. It is a water-soluble, organomercurial compound with the chemical formula CHNOS. It has been used as an antimicrobial agent for its ability to inhibit growth of microorganisms by interfering with the synthesis of proteins. Thiomersal is also used in the manufacture of some types of rubber, such as latex gloves, and as a preservative in biological research.
