2,4,6-Trimethylbenzyl mercaptan is a synthetic molecule that can be used for the treatment of brain cancer by encapsulating it in zeolites. This process has been shown to increase the uptake of mercaptans in rat brain cells. Mercaptans such as 2,4,6-trimethylbenzyl mercaptan are covalently linked to metal ions and fluorescent molecules to create a strategy for the treatment of brain cancer. These linkages are covalent and strong enough to withstand the harsh environment of the cytosol. The use of these linkages also reduces the effects on healthy cells and increases potency.
