Tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)erbium(III) is a metal/semiconductor material that can be used for photonics, optoelectronics, and other applications. It has been shown to exhibit photochromism, supramolecular chemistry, and mesoporous properties. Tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)erbium(III) reacts with surfactants such as propylamine to form a self-assembled monolayer on the surface of nanoparticles. This layer is stable at high temperatures and can be used to coat optical components such as mirrors or lenses. The reaction also generates a color change in the compound from red to green when exposed to UV light.
